Teaching Individual Man-to-Man Defense in Basketball

Everyone likes offense. Very few players gets out in the gym floor and practices in defensive techniques.

This is where a coach plays a big role in developing the defensive philosophy of the team and in directing the development of the individual defensive improvement of his/her players.

Today we need players that have the ability to disrupt the opponents’ offense through great defensive play.

Playing defense requires a special kind of person.

The first aspect is mental attitude.

The player must develop such qualities as confidence, toughness, competitiveness, aggressiveness and courage.

The second aspect is attention to physical parts of the game.

Defensing the man with the ball

  1. Stay between the offensive player and the basket.

  2. Align with the dribble.

  3. Stay low, ready to react in any direction.

  4. Without dribble, become active in order to disrupt the opponent’s vision and deflect a pass.

Defensing the man without the ball

  1. Good defensive stance.

  2. Help teammates, but still in a position to return to your own player.

  3. Have a good technique.

  4. Have balance.

  5. Make your opponent work hard to catch the ball.

  6. Prevent all penetrations.

  7. Never let an opponent cut between you and the ball.

  8. Turn your opponent move to an area where help waits.

  9. Contest all shots.

  10. Communicate!

  11. Box Out.
