Basketball Hoops
In 1891 Naismith hung the sport’s first wooden baskets in a balcony of the indoor gymnasium of the “School of Christian Workers” (later called Springfield College).
This basket height has never changed!
Despite so many changes in the rules of the sport, the height of the baskets remained the same!
In 1892 Lew Allen made the first iron cylindrical baskets as we know them with netting. At first with a rope which when pulled released the ball. Then they made a hole with scissors and the ball would fall by itself.
As you can see in the photo of the time,
many times the spectators who were on the balcony disturbed the ball with their feet and the baskets did not go in!
This was also the reason to place the boards behind the hoops!
With dimensions of 3.60 X 1.80 they were placed and changed the whole image of the sport.
